Mountain towns are much like beach towns. Laid back, friendly people roam the streets with their skis, boards and seize-the-day attitudes. Both towns offer relaxing atmospheres, breathtaking scenery and options to either lounge or play, depending on one’s preference. During the three years I lived in and traveled through Colorado, I had the opportunity to visit a number of mountain towns, all which held their own unique characteristics. Among my favorites is Breckenridge.
While some dedicated winter athletes may opt to spend a day riding or skiing down other nearby resort runs, few can argue against Breckenridge’s sense of community. The main part of town sits just far enough off the highway to seem like its own world, though it is far from desolate. The locals love the mountains and live for the outdoors, and this way of life radiates to the town’s welcomed visitors. Snow pants and sweaty heads are not only appropriate in restaurants, but expected, as most enjoy good food and a cold beer after a long day on the sunny slopes.
While the best views in town rest among the mountaintops, much can be enjoyed among the streets. Shops and restaurants line the main strip, and gorgeous condominiums fill just enough space to accommodate tourists but still keep Breckenridge beautiful. With the help of heat lamps, bar patios are open year-round so guests can enjoy the beautiful scenery with their favorite beers.
Oh, little town of Breckenridge, how still we see thee lie…and still it is in the summers. But once the snow falls, those energetic souls in snow pants wake this little town in the Rockies, surfing the slopes with high spirits and a strong taste for adventure.
